About this mezcal

Cuish Penca Larga was distilled by maestro mezcalero Hermogenes Vasquez in San Luis Amatlan, Miahuatlan, Oaxaca, Mexico. The harvested agaves were cooked in an underground stone-lined oven, milled by a desgarradora (shredder), naturally fermented in Montezuma Cypress vats, and twice distilled in copper pots.

Cuish Mezcales

Mezcales Cuish is made up of rural producers that are dedicated to the production and commercialization of traditional Oaxacan mezcal from different regions and agave varieties.

For many years, Mezcales Cuish has operated a mezcaleria in Oaxaca City a few blocks southwest of Mercado Benito Juarez. A second location was opened in Centro, Oaxaca. In 2019, the brand began exporting to the United States. Mezcal Reviews lists a mix of their exported releases along with Oaxaca releases requested by website members.

Lot: PL-III-22 45% abv

Smells karwinskii
– grass swamp grass
– fruit sweetness, strawberry and melon
– hard candy

Dry character, strawberry candy (the one in the strawberry wrapper) wet redwood, earthy and grassy backend, mellow heat, lingering finish and sweet smoke.

My batch is a bit different in abv than Jam. But we picked up on some of the same grassy notes. I first was exposed to this brand-maguey at Madre at a blind tasting hosted by Ivan Vasquez and it really stood out. Very unique flavors and profile. I have had one other Penca Larga and it was a standout as well.

48% abv, lote HBG-PL/IX-22

Review #128: The nose has earth, grass, wet cement, cinnamon, burnt caramel, and petrichor.
The palate has earth, hay, grass, leafy greens, burnt caramel, cinnamon, milk chocolate, lime, salt, and the finish has coffee, dark chocolate, and lots of minerality.

This is really delicious. It is overall quite earthy and dark with great chocolate flavors coming through. Some light citrus, minerality, and green notes help keep a bit of balanced brightness to it so everything still shines. It’s just a touch drying overall for me to be really excellent, but I do love the strong profile.
