About this mezcal

Del Maguey Tobaziche is produced by Paciano Cruz Nolasco and Marcos Cruz Mendez in San Luis Del Rio using wild maguey Tobaziche which is a rare member of the agave Karwinskii family. This mezcal is naturally fermented in open-air wooden vats. This mezcal is peaty, earthy and smoky with an underlying sweetness of citrus fruit. Del Maguey Tobaziche was released as part of a series of bottlings for La Maison du Whisky’s Cellar Book series.

Del Maguey Mezcal

Del Maguey (pronounced ma–gay), Single Village Mezcal was founded in 1995 by internationally renowned artist and Mezcal visionary, Ron Cooper. Ron introduced the world to previously unavailable 100% certified organic, artisanal Mezcal produced the original handcrafted way. Through deep cultural relationships with Zapotec Mexican Indian producers in the remote villages of Oaxaca, Mexico, Del Maguey harnesses ancient, original organic processes. Combining these methods with varying micro-climates and terroir gives each creation its own unique, rich, sweet and smoky character. Every product in their collection is made by individual family palenqueros (producers) in old-style villages. They are the first producer to credit each product after the village where our liquid is made. When you see their beautiful green bottles you know it’s Del Maguey. Most of Del Maguey’s mezcals are distilled to proof, so the ABV will vary slightly between batches.

In June of 2017, international spirits company, Pernod Ricard, purchased majority stake in the company. Del Maguey is now part of their portfolio that includes Jameson Whiskey, Absolute Vodka, and Havana Club Rum.

Found this on sale at a local shop so wanted to give it a shot, as I haven’t really had a bottle of Tobaziche outside of an ensamble and I love Karwinskii. As others mentioned, def getting some vanilla, leather, tobacco and fruity sweetness as well. This one is very well balanced and doesn’t taste watered down. I know DM is not always well received in the world of mezcal for valid reasons but this is solid. I’d probably not purchase a bottle at full price because I can get other brands and bottles for a $120 price point that are better but if you can catch it at $90, go for it.

Not very much smoke on the nose, but there is raspberry, a bit tar, leather, bright Virginia tobacco and grapefruit peel.
I can agree on the macho, leathery, deep flavours on the palate. Wood, Brazil nut, pecan, almond. Boiled cherries from a pie, brambles, succade (candied citron peels) and lychee. Cinnamon, cedar and coconut with brown skin on the finish. Alcohol is integrated, and it has a nice, pleasant structure to it. Needs to be savoured early in the evening.
Delighted to find this! But unfortunately the barman threw away the bottle as I had emptied it, so no lot. I suspect it had been opened for a while, not a typical place to sell much mezcal. Furthermore, I don’t think LMDW still sells it (august 2022), not sure if DM still produces it at all. But what a treat.

Lot: TOBA-151
Nose – Saddle leather. Mint leaf. Chocolate covered blueberry. Rolling tobacco.

Palate – Dried plums. Grapefruit citrus. Spearmint heat and a bit of Turkish Delight in the finish. A big, long aftertaste of a very fine cigar. This is an incredible tobasiche, one of my favorites. But I agree with the others, it’s pretty heavy though. I’ll enjoy this a sipper or two over time (i.e. not crushable) – I’m really glad I found this bottle though.

Very deep and dark, goes wonderfully with spicy, roasted vegetables. The more I sipped the more I respected this mezcal. As Jonny said “heavy and animalistic” it’s just the way it is.

Bold flavors. Lots of dark fruit. A bit grassy. Overall a bit heavy and dark. Very fruity. Not sure I needed a whole bottle but I’m enjoying the pour. Lot 15-1.

Batch TOBA-151. Strong tobacco aroma at bottle opening. The palate has more tobacco, leather, tanned hides…very John Wayne….heavy and animalistic. A little dark. Good finish. This is really nice and it’s too bad it’s only available in Europe.
