Maguey Melate Espadilla is one of the last batches of mezcal ever produced by legendary mezcalero Federico “Don Fede” Alva Ibañez.
About this destilado de agave
This Maguey Melate Espadilla from Federico “Don Fede” Alva Ibañez was released as part of a limited edition set that contains some of the very last batches Federico Alva Ibañez made before passing away in March 2021 at the age of 97. Don Fede was a leader in his community by providing numerous generous donations and sharing his wisdom on life.
Don Fede is survived by his daughter Alicia, who was featured as Maguey Melate’s Mezcalera of the Month in March of 2022.
Maguey Melate
Maguey Melate was founded on two ideas: 1) Artisanal agave spirits are amazing and should be shared with the world, and 2) The faster-cheaper economy is a harmful force for people, the environment, and now agave spirits.
They believe if mezcal (and agave spirits) can be understood and appreciated at its full potential, people will show their preference for quality artisanal mezcal that is sustainably and fairly sourced. By raising consumer consciousness on the origins of mezcal and educating enthusiasts on matters of quality and character, informed people will be empowered to ensure the future of mezcal. To do this, they’re reaching a large audience with an impactful message: KEEP MEZCAL ARTISANAL!
Maguey Melate is perhaps most well-known for their Mezcalero of the Month Club, which delivers artisanal small-batch agave spirits directly to the doors of consumers in the US and Mexico. In addition to the monthly spirits, they offer exclusive content and interviews with producers. Single releases are also available in the Maguey Melate shop.

122 reviewsI love the aroma and like the taste! Different than the 45% espadilla from the MM taster box 1. Not as smooth and not as interesting. Aroma is the best part with lots of floral and some fruit. I could smell it all day. The taste is a little hot with pepper and some good earth. Tyler is right when he mentions Angustifolia…very classic mezcal tastes. The finish is just ok for me. It is a little sour with some bitterness. Tough to give Don Fede less than 4 stars as he is one of my favorites. Got this from K and L wines in Hollywood.

665 reviewsDelicious mezcal. The heat isn’t too powerful. Tastes like an Americana or Angustifolia to me. One of the better releases from the late Don Fede.
