About this mezcal

Rey Campero Jabali + Tepextate is an Ensamble of wild agave Jabali and wild agave Tepextate. This is an interesting mix of agave for maestro mezcalero Romulo Sanchez Parada as he is perhaps most well known for his single varietal expressions of these two agave. He was one of the first to have regular success with agave Jabali and his Tepextate mezcals have been lauded at several international spirits competitions.

Rey Campero Mezcal

Rey Campero represents the culture, tradition and art of Candelaria Yegolé, a small town in the Southern Highlands of Oaxaca, with a fertile ground on its slopes and canyons. It represents a people dedicated to the production of artisanal Mezcal, so one of its principles is to help producers of maguey, by creating job opportunities, but especially in finding markets for the best Mezcal. Rey Campero, means "King of the Countryside" and it was founded by the maestro mezcalero Romulo Sanchez Parada. Romulo learned how to make mezcal from his father, and he worked in the palenque until age 20. He lived and worked for several years in North Carolina while in his 20s before returning to Oaxaca in 2003. Each lot may vary slightly, so check your bottle for specific details about ABV.

  • Overall:

Awesome ensamble from Romulo at Rey Campero. Two very interesting agaves together in a 50/50 marriage of unique flavors. It opens up as agave Jabali with melon notes and finishes with the green peppers of agave Tepextate. The 100% agave Jabali from Rey Campero is explosive whereas the flavors here are quite graceful. It’s a different experience with these two agaves and really enjoyable. October 2016 batch of 280 bottles total.

A combination of two of my favorite varietals. Nothing else like this out, that I know of. Taste Peppery on the front with citrus-sour on the back.

Lot DS001-TS from Oct 2016. Bottle 09/280. Sweet aromas of caramel, butterscotch, and nail polish. The flavors in this are amazing. Totally unique! Flavors of freshly ground pepper, caramel, candied orange, and sweet lemon aid. Really enjoyed this special mezcal.
