Catching up some old reviews. Bought this before I really got into mezcal and just opened the bottle back up and was appalled lol there’s not really a reason to buy this mezcal. There’s plenty of others that are better if you’re looking for a mixer. No need to get a 40% bottle. Pass on it.

Cuentacuentos Tepeztate – Serafín

May 12, 2024

Solid tepeztate! First and only time trying Cuentacuentos so far and I was pretty impressed with the flavor for the price point! Got lots of bell pepper flavors in this one and really enjoyed sipping it! Would def recommend if you can find it

Real Minero Marteño, Barril

May 1, 2024

Had my eye on this bottle at Moreno’s for a while and finally pulled the trigger on it today. I LOVE marteño maguey but it’s very hard to find outside of Minas so I naturally wanted this bottle for that reason. I am not really getting much marteno flavor in this bottle at the moment though. It tastes more like a very expensive tobasiche from Minas, which is unfortunate. Still very good but not getting those peanut flavor notes of the marteno and picking up more leathery, vanilla, and even floral notes too. The bottle has been sitting for a while so hoping it changes with time– again, still great but not at all what I was expecting from the flavor profile.

Real Minero Largo

May 1, 2024

I really love anything I’ve tried from Real Minero and the Largo is somewhat of a staple from them. Bought this at Rosewood in Mayakoba while we were on vacation and paid way too much for it but downed it in 4 days lol really solid Karwinskii, green, bright, vegetal, but also a bit sweet too. Clay pot adds a beautiful texture and its so easy to sip, hence downing it so quick. Tastes like Minas.

5 Sentidos Candelillo

Apr 17, 2024

I noticed this one peeking out from one of the shelves and when I got home had to do some research, as I’d never heard of it! Rakhal’s review made me super interested so, of course, had to go back today to purchase the bottle lol this is an incredible bottle! The nose is a bit different than the flavor profile. Right away definitely getting the green, vegetal aromas from the karwinskii along with the earthy, soil, wet leaves and some citrus aromas. The taste is complex and sweet but not overly sweet– musty and moldy with citrus and funk and I love it. Salinity is present but also can tell this one was distilled in a hybrid still, some metallic aftertaste from the still. From brief research, I didn’t see other brands that had a Candelillo mezcal in the US so definitely going to cherish this bottle lol

EDIT: coming back and adding a comment now that this has opened up for a few weeks. BUY THIS IF YOU CAN FIND IT. Wish I could rate over 5 stars but this is even better now that it’s opened up. WOW.

Mezcalero No. 13

Apr 16, 2024

Interesting bottle. Very tepe forward and I’d like to know if this is a 50/50 split but I’d assume not. After finishing off the bottle im still not sure how I feel about it. The peppery notes of the tepe hit you first and there’s a but of tropical sweetness that follows slightly before returning back to the tepeztate for an aftertaste. I enjoy it but don’t know if I would buy again.

Bruxo No. 4 Ensamble

Apr 16, 2024

Ok I actually really enjoyed this ensamble, especially for the price point. I found the flavor to be not overly bold but not overly faint either. A very nice middle ground and good sipper. The karwinskii of the barril and Cuishe were overly present, which I appreciated. More green and vegetal with just a bit of backend complexity and burn from the Espadin. Won’t blow you away but you don’t need it to for what you can get this bottle for. Solid.

Montelobos Ensamble

Apr 16, 2024

Found this to be solid in Cabo where mezcal selection isn’t abundant. Runs only about $60-$70 for a bottle and is solid as a sipper or mixer. Not overly complex but not very watered down either and can catch some nice fruitiness from the tobala. A bit of heat from the cupreata and espadin. Overall solid ensamble.

5 Sentidos Sierra Negra

Apr 16, 2024

Got this at Binny’s. Tossed the bottle so forgot to grab the lot but I was somewhat impressed from this expression but would not buy it again, as there’s so much more from 5s I would spend $120 on instead! However, this one was funky with a burn. Barnyard funk was how someone put it and I love that. Felt a bit animalistic and dark and had a bit of a burn like an Espadin, as I tend to get from many Americanas. I love how long this one lingered in my mouth after the sips though and that kept me going back to my liquor closet for another pour

5 Sentidos Jabali-Tobala

Apr 16, 2024

Also tasted this at Mezcali in NYC. Wondered about this bottle and it was in direct line of sight so I said pour me one please! I’m a huge fan of the 5S line and this one did not disappoint. Earthy and funky, with a a bit of a soapy taste from the Jabali. Tropical fruit and mustiness. Minerality and viscous. Just a lot of fun to drink and if it wasn’t NYC prices per pour I would’ve drank more lol

Macurichos Espadin con Cacao

Apr 16, 2024

Tasted this at Mezcali in NYC where the owner was generous enough to chat mezcal and pass off a sample pour of this. Not much to say about it besides the fact that it tastes like you’re getting turnt drinking chocolate in the best way possible haha I also appreciate the fact that with this bottle you’re not left guessing what was distilled with the agave— it’s written and it’s obvious! Fun bottle and great idea!

Mezcal Gin MG

Apr 16, 2024

This one is solid but so different to the point where it almost doesn’t even feel like mezcal. Haven’t tried the Gracias a Dios mezcal gin but would like to. Gin was my first love before mezcal lol so naturally had to try this. Sipping it is not really too enjoyable but will admit that a mezcal gin gimlet or a “gin”and tonic with this is fun! Worth a keep in the stash.

Gracias a Dios Espadin

Apr 16, 2024

Catching up on some old bottles with reviews tonight lol solid price point for cocktails and as a mixer. Would grab this over Vida, Banhez, or some of the other popular picks. Can be ok by itself as a sipper but wouldn’t recommend

El Jolgorio Madrecuishe

Apr 16, 2024

Really surprised this doesn’t have higher reviews, but given that the batches vary I guess that makes sense. I love this Madrecuishe and found it to be very unique. First had a pour in Boston and was drawn to the chocolatey undertones mixed with the typical grassiness and vegetal madre vibes. However, this one also has a salinity and asphalt taste to it that just is so different and keeps me coming back for more. I wish that El Jolgorio would price a bit lower given their larger batches but I love this bottle.

Gusto Historico Tepextate/ Tobala/ Cuixe/ Madrecuixe – Vázquez

Apr 16, 2024

God damn I love this bottle. The smell hits you from a mile away– it’s the kind of bottle I have everyone smell lol even if they don’t like mezcal it objectively just smells amazing. As others have mentioned, the balance on this one is incredible. I feel like each small sip has so many layers to it– bell pepper, vegetal, green, and a really bright overall finish. The taste will linger in your mouth for a LONG time after a slight sip of this one. Just fantastic stuff!

Gusto Historico Puntas de Bicuixe, Espadin, y Madrecuixe con Lima – Juárez

Apr 16, 2024

Was at Estereo near me and they introduced me to Gusto Historico via this bottle– didn’t realize it was Puntas until after I looked at the bottle because it was loud in the place lol also this is incredibly smooth for being 60%. Very green, sweet, bright and the burn isn’t overpowering. Loved this in a 2 oz pour and would possibly buy a full bottle in the future if I start adding more puntas to my collection.

La Luna Cupreata

Apr 16, 2024

Won’t blow your mind as a sipper but I really actually like this as a mixer for a mezcal margarita and similar price point to Oaxacan espadin mixer mezcals.

La Luna Bruto

Apr 16, 2024

As opposed to the Chino, I found this one to be really interesting and easy to drink! Sampled it at a friends house and was immediately drawn to the smell, almost like a pack of skittles— super fruity. The taste integrates some of that fruit and tropical fruit flavor with a nice balance of smoke and the aftertaste is the fruit again. I was really impressed by this one and while I probably wouldn’t buy it myself, I’d definitely enjoy it again on someone else’s dime or at a restaurant 🙂

La Luna Chino

Apr 16, 2024

Went on a limb and gave this one a shot and kind of wish I wouldn’t have. I wasn’t really too impressed by this expression and there are some light fruit flavors and the pink lemonade that others mentioned was somewhat present but I think the smokiness overpowered this one. I think if the smoke was more of a flavor and less of a burn, I would’ve been more into it but I’d prefer to grab something else in the future!

Rey Campero Chato

Apr 15, 2024

Living in Chicago is great for many reasons, one being that I was able to snag what I think is one of the last bottles of this from Moreno’s. would be 4/4.5 stars but made it 5 stars because of hometown bias and the people and selection at Moreno’s are always top notch 🙂 Nose of tropical fruit, saltwater and ocean breeze, and minerality and light smoke. Drinking this at first, the profile read more like a tepeztate with bell pepper/fruit forward flavors but the potatorum follows the rest of the way. I also get green jolly rancher/green apple notes as well. Signature Rey Campero burn is present but not as prominent as some of their other selections. Great bottle and glad I have one now from a collector’s standpoint!
