Vago Bien Picado – Aquilino

Oct 13, 2019

Lot A-05-EM-19. 50.5% ABV. 139 liters. Aromas of dried herbs, hay, tobacco, green olives, lavender, fresh collard greens, pine, and strawberry leaves. Great viscosity. The palate has notes of newly tanned leather, hay, coffee beans, toffee, prunes, dark plums, and chocolate dipped strawberries. This is really fantastic. It keeps gaining complexity the more of it I sip. Incredible.

Gracias a Dios Pechuga

Lot 02P 18-104. Nice fresh fruit aromas of orange, pineapple, and guava. A bit of all spice on the nose as well. Very pleasant to sip. Hints of smoked turkey come up from the back of the palate while a blend of olive oil, lavender, and rhubarb cascade from front to back. Medium body with a nice finish. For the price, this is a really good pickup.

5 Sentidos Tobaziche – Sergio Juarez

Aug 21, 2019

Wow. This is hard to wrap your head around. Uber complex. On the nose, the first thing that hits you is this fresh green pepper note that’s in a very high octave. Beneath that is this deep, earthy bass note of peanut butter. Both aromas hit you at once, but separately, before giving way to more aromas of coffee and pepper. The palate is mostly treble, but equally perplexing. Notes of new basketballs, fresh sneakers, new tires, slate, diesel, garlic, and a hint of chalk. This is just wild. If you can find, please try. Batch ACL 01-19. 48.4%

Mezcalero No. 23

Aug 21, 2019

This took a minute or so to open up. Now I’ve had a couple pours of this over the past few days and they’re all consistently awesome. The nose has aromas of both earth and candy: burnt flowers, hay, barnyard stank, mixing with air heads, chocolate cherries, raspberry sherbet, and plum. The palate has this super rich note of dark cherries mixing with sweet licorice, spearmint, menthol, candy apples, and ripe plum. There’s lots of dark fruit notes on this, but I wouldn’t say it’s a “dark” mezcal. It’s still pretty bright considering the richer, darker tones. Really enjoying this!

Real Minero Barril, Madrecuishe

Jul 28, 2019

ARMBM-02. Bottle 03/78. From March 2018. Very complex and balanced. Aromas of peanut butter, almond, coconut rind, spearmint, and lemon zest. Flavors of Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups, dry leaves, rope, a fall day in New England, maple, coffee grounds, mint and hibiscus tea, and wet soil.

Mezcalosfera Maguey Tobasiche – Emanuel Ramos

Jul 28, 2019

Sweet woody aromas of sugar cane, hickory smoked bacon, and sandalwood. The palate is super soft and confidently balanced. Notes of lavender, boiled lemons, clove, Butterfingers, caramel, a bit of rosemary, and strawberry fruit leather. There’s some heat throughout but it never takes control, staying as warmth in the background.

La Jicarita Sierra Negra

Jul 20, 2019

Fresh aromas of pear, green apples, green bananas, and tomatillo. The palate is bright up front with notes of brown sugar, oranges, burnt sage, cinnamon, and cooked egg yoke. Medium finish. Rough around the edges but good. Reminiscent of Brando in A Streetcar Named Desire.

La Jicarita Pechuga

Jul 20, 2019

Rich and full aromas of juniper and gin botanicals, plantains, big red bubble gum, and sweet bell peppers. The palate is equally as full. Crazy flavors all over the palate. Tons of herbs and spices, spearmint, Rosemary, mole, bubble gum, with a white onion finish. This is very enjoyable.

Don Mateo El Legado

Jul 13, 2019

Smells full and bright with notes of orange, lime, vanilla, orange creamsicle, and light cheddar cheese. The palate is full and round. Medium finish. Notes of leather, asparagus, carrots, potatoes, ORANGE SODA, and cilantro. This is amazing!

Mezonte Michoacan – Jorge Perez

Jul 13, 2019

Lot 01 from 2018. 285 litres produced. Sour notes of wild apples and vinegar on the nose and palate. The palate expands into charred peaches, burned apples, and charred bananas. Lot of grilled fruits on this and a big Strawberry note throughout. Enjoyed it a great deal.

Mezonte Raicilla Japo – Hildegardo Joya

Jul 13, 2019

Lot 01 from 2018. 400 litres in the batch. Aromas of yogurt, hot dog water, and pickles… in kind of a good way, but very funky. Slight ammonia aroma as well…again not off putting, but very funky. A bit thin on the palate with notes of fresh cotton, lemon peel, potatoes skins, and more boiled hot dogs. This is dynamic and complex for sure. Not my favorite however, but it might just not be a good fit for my palate.

Del Maguey Boca del Cerro

Jul 13, 2019

Awesome story behind this batch. This is a total collector’s bottle. Aromas vanilla, bright oranges. Palate notes of plum, pear, mango. A bit astringent. This is good, like all Chichicapa is good, but it tastes very similar to a regular Chichicapa, except for this one big note of plum on this! Tasted this side by side with a regular Chichicapa. There were some marginal differences, like that big plum note on this one. It’s a cool story behind this one for sure.

Cómplice Reposado

Jul 7, 2019

Lot EXR003. From Ignacio Martínez from 2018. Very sweet aromas with hints of sour apples and caramel. Flavors are typical of reposados: vanilla, caramel, candied wood, and brown sugar. Tasty.

Cómplice Espadin

Jul 7, 2019

Lot EXJ003. From Ignacio Martínez in 2018. Smells very sweet. Aromas of sour apples, unripe bananas, strawberry, and soy sauce. The palate is crisp with notes of vanilla, cream, and yogurt. This is lightly lactic on the palate.

Viejo Indecente Espadin

Jul 7, 2019

Smells very clean and sweet. Aromas of green vegetation and thick sweet caramel. Minty on the back of the palate with note of vanilla, cinnamon, and salt on the front of the palate. Tastes of pure cooked agave with no smoke or hints of char. Batch 01-17 from 2017. Bottle 262.

Siete Misterios Barril

Jul 7, 2019

Lot BRL 01/18. Bottle 432/1189. Produced by “Don Armando G.” Aromas of old dry flowers, peanuts, and lilac and lemon zest. Tastes of mid, clay, dark fruits like papaya with a bit of lemon peel, raisins, brown sugar, and chocolate. This was the tail end of the bottle and I’m not sure how long it’d been almost empty on the shelf. Regardless, the alcohol was present but muted with the bigger flavors up front.

Legendario Domingo Michoacán Ensamble

Jul 7, 2019

Batch MICHEX-03. Bottle 023/516. Notes of dark fruit and perfume. Hints of indica and fresh dark dank bud. Plums, mango, papaya. Fruity and full. Additional notes of pepper and butterscotch on the finish.

Marca Negra Sierra Negra

Jun 17, 2019

46.2%. Smells very clean with hints of cleaning agents: vinegar, bleach, lemon, pine. The palate is a bit spiny as well. Notes of charcoal, dried fish, nori, iodine, and slate. It’s a little hot up front but rounds out with a vanilla-cherry finish. There’s a numbing, cotton-like factor that lingers in the mouth long after.

Real Minero Espadin, Barril, Largo, Mexicanito

Jun 16, 2019

Lote RM4N-01. Aromas of chocolate, peanuts, and wet leaves. Tastes of chocolate oranges, kale, pickled carrots, kimchi, and red pepper. Pricey but totally worth it. This is really nice.
