Palenqueros Mexicano

Palenqueros Mexicano is a limited release from the famed maestro mezcalero Don Valente Angel, who is known for producing great finesse.

About this mezcal

Palenqueros Mexicano is made by maestro mezcalero Don Valente Angel in his tiny community of Santa Maria La Pila. The nose and the palate of this mezcal are full of fresh plants like sage and eucalyptus with a light veil of smoke. There are notes of pink pepper and a slight bitterness that’s balanced by citrus zest.

Palenqueros Mezcal

Palenqueros Mezcal is marketed as Single Palenque mezcal, meaning that it’s produced by a single mezcalero at a single distilling facility. The brand is a collaboration project between Tradición Chagoya, which owns and operates other mezcal brands like Donaji and Los Cuerudos, and Velier Italia, an Italian spirits company.

Yes, fabric softener. Was unmistakeable.. but I will say that fades as the bottle is consumed. But it never goes away. Floral Fabric Softener – per Jonny and Rakhal.
I like it, but will not grab this particular expression from Palenqueros again.

Nose is sweet like honey and vanilla – in fact, immediately reminded me of Mezcalero No 22 which is a different agave but the same mezcalero, I believe.
Now, the taste is where things get really crazy – there is some sort of soap or shampoo flavor going on (others said “fabric softener”) with a mix of warm cooking spices. A bit of a warm and sweet aftertaste on the tongue, nothing too noticeable. One of the strangest mezcals I’ve tasted.
Batch VGMX01. Paid $75 in Washington, DC.

Nice, complex and super smooth mezcal.
A soft nose with sugar cane and raspberry.
Flavours bounce around the palate with some hard to put a finger on… Sweet fruit, leather, mineral, earthiness.
Very nice mouthfeel.
Yep, this is a high quality spirit from Don Valente.

Batch: VGMX01. Don Valente is one of my all time favorite Mezcaleros. Almost all of his Mezcals have this flavor profile that reminds me of pound cake, maybe it’s his well water. Anyways, Jonny nailed it with the “fabric softener” note. This is very floral but in a fabric softener sort of way. I hate fabric softener, one of the first phrases I learned in Spanish was “sin suavitel”. However, I love this Mezcal. Pound cake, fabric softener, cracked black pepper, vanilla ice cream, rock salt, Nag Champa incense, and cinnamon.

Batch VGMX01. Beautiful nose, full of sweet grains, sourdough, brown sugar, maple syrup, perfume, lavender, and rose water. The palate has some nice grilled fruits, charred apricot, cooked plantains, grilled green peppers. Also some notes of grape soda, fabric softener, jasmine, hibiscus, and chalk. Really enjoyable.
