Palenqueros Tobaziche – Rey Arellanes

Palenqueros Tobaziche is distilled in small clay pots by Rey Arellanes in Santa Catarina Minas, Oaxaca.

About this mezcal

This Palenqueros Tobaziche is made by Rey Arellanes in Santa Catarina Minas, Oaxaca. Palenqueros also has a Tobaziche from Juan Hernandez, which is produced in a very different style. The Tobaziche from Rey Arellanes is produced at a palenque that’s about 1,500 meters above sea level. The agaves are cooked in an underground pit oven, milled by hand with mallets, fermented with wild airborne yeasts for twelve days, and double distilled in a small clay pot still.

Palenqueros Mezcal

Palenqueros Mezcal is marketed as Single Palenque mezcal, meaning that it’s produced by a single mezcalero at a single distilling facility. The brand is a collaboration project between Tradición Chagoya, which owns and operates other mezcal brands like Donaji and Los Cuerudos, and Velier Italia, an Italian spirits company.

Just picked this one up– it’s always hard to pass on a Palenqueros expression because they typically run around $80/bottle and for the quality and uniqueness, that’s a hard price point to be. I didn’t realize this was ancestral until after the purchase and the clay flavor is a bit overpowering here. Adds a bit of a coke icee flavor to the mix, which is not my favorite. But still a great sipper and it’s hard for me to knock it too much when they provide a quality product at a really affordable price.

Batch RATZ01. 420 bottles. Has anyone ever made a bad Tobaziche in Minas?! It doesn’t seems like it. This is very nice. Vegetative, herbatious aromas. Nose has hints of fresh peas, dried spearmint, and cooked cabbage. The palate is balanced. Notes of burnt toast, chipotle, and smoked meats. Leathery finish
