About this mezcal
The Rey Campero Cuishe mezcalero, Romulo Sanchez Parada, learned how to make mezcal from his dad and worked in the palenque until he was 20. When the economy went bad and Mezcal was no longer a viable enterprise he emigrated north and worked in North Carolina. He returned to Mexico in 2003, gathered his family, and began making Mezcal again. Rey Campero Cuishe has a very clean, crisp nose with a nice fruit and mineral mixing with some heat on the finish.

Rey Campero represents the culture, tradition and art of Candelaria Yegolé, a small town in the Southern Highlands of Oaxaca, with a fertile ground on its slopes and canyons. It represents a people dedicated to the production of artisanal Mezcal, so one of its principles is to help producers of maguey, by creating job opportunities, but especially in finding markets for the best Mezcal. Rey Campero, means “King of the Countryside” and it was founded by the maestro mezcalero Romulo Sanchez Parada. Romulo learned how to make mezcal from his father, and he worked in the palenque until age 20. He lived and worked for several years in North Carolina while in his 20s before returning to Oaxaca in 2003. Each lot may vary slightly, so check your bottle for specific details about ABV.

Appearance: Clear, decent legs with slow beads.
Nose: Grilled [green] banana. Ashy, peppery, starchy. Good aromatics with some hazelnut, more banana, slight orange bitters, lemon pith, lime, minerals. Chamomile, light vanilla, cardamom, slight dried pepper (green, maybe some ancho). Maybe that vanilla is actually coffee. Air is helping a bit.
Palate: Yea, karwinskii, dry but this does have some good sweetness. Not “wowing” me, really, slightly hot finish. Sides of my mouth are a little refreshed, retronasal is sweeter banana and white pepper. Slight caramelization. Finish could be longer. Off a suspicion, a splash of water was added, it helped a touch to bring out the lemon and make the banana less “Runtz” and more “grocery store”, both are acceptable to me.
Thoughts: Meh? I’ll be sure to revisit but I’m glad I didn’t get a whole bottle. Karwinskiis are hard to do right, and this just bores me. Still a good brand always worth supporting, but this batch is a pass.

Every one I’ve had . . . never disappointed and if you ever see Parada’s Secretos de Yegole Coyote, don’t pass it up. It’s five star unobtanium. Drinking the Cuishe today with two more expensive Jolgorios from the Karwinskii family, the Barril and the Tobaziche. Definitely not the runt of the litter!
Dec 4, 2018 – polished off the bottle last weekend with some friends. Went to restock, which is always a good sign. There were four or five left and one lone RC Jabali on the shelf for a few dollars more, so it got the nod today.
