Rey Campero Mezcal
Rey Campero represents the culture, tradition and art of Candelaria Yegolé, a small town in the Southern Highlands of Oaxaca, with a fertile ground on its slopes and canyons. It represents a people dedicated to the production of artisanal Mezcal, so one of its principles is to help producers of maguey, by creating job opportunities, but especially in finding markets for the best Mezcal. Rey Campero, means “King of the Countryside” and it was founded by the maestro mezcalero Romulo Sanchez Parada. Romulo learned how to make mezcal from his father, and he worked in the palenque until age 20. He lived and worked for several years in North Carolina while in his 20s before returning to Oaxaca in 2003. Each lot may vary slightly, so check your bottle for specific details about ABV.

87 reviewsAs others have alluded to, the heat on this one is the first quality to linger. Notes of chocolate, raisins, a bit earthy with the Cuishe but the coyote feels a bit dominant in this one, even though it’s equal parts in the ensamble. I like Rey campero products but this for the cost on this expression, I’d reach for something else.

144 reviewsBatch D5002-4M. — Sweet, crisp, acidic and spritely. There’s a great combination of earth, soil, clay, crisp fruits and that iconic Tep note. A bit ashy on the back palate, great pepper character keeps things well balanced.
Overall, I really love this. Sweet, but not too sweet. Fruity, but not too fruity. Savory and zesty – but again not too much. The smoke is just right, and this is an Ensamble to remember.

The finish is the best part on this one – comes out of nowhere! Initially get some cream, grass, orange, vanilla almonds, and then bam – pink bubblegum at the finish. Complex and very interesting! Bit hot though as others have pointed out. 2oz sample. 4.25 stars.

160 reviewsincredible!the nose on this was almost nil.it didnt give any hint of the amazing flavor.i got reserved notes of pepper and fruit scent.the initial taste was all over the place.an explosion of salty, sweet, hot, and spicy.mid way i got hints of the individual agaves but each note would transition into another very quickly.i got the candy notes that the others mentioned on the finish.it had some strong heat but was fleeting and i thought it was the perfect match for the complexity.very compact.one sample isnt enough to try and define this fine spirit.

661 reviewsI’ve had a 2oz dram half empty for a few months. Enjoying it much more now than my first impression. It’s got some heat but isn’t overwhelming. Lots of candy notes as others have noted. I get a bit of Nerds and Sour Patch Kids. Agaves are all equal parts with the chocolate Mexicano and dry wood Karwinskii standing out a bit more than the others. It’s pretty good – really liking the more recent ensambles from Romulo.

424 reviewsVery hot! Nail polish remover and rubbing alcohol hot. Banana, big league chew, and red vines. It’s possible it would have mellowed out over time but this was only a one ounce sample.

717 reviewsAromas of orange juice, pineapple, raisins, and slight apple cider vinegar. The palate has notes of sweet tarts, pixie sticks, yogurt covered raisins, and orange creamcicles. This is really a fantastic spirit. The field blends from Romulo do not disappoint and this one is special.
