Flor del Desierto Cascabel

Feb 10, 2023

Definitely a meaty bite to it. Light bbq smoke, cotija cheese, mint. Spicy pepper, herbal and light floral notes. Some oak and earthiness. Tons of flavor, light on booze. A real pleasure to drink

Real Minero Pechuga

Feb 10, 2023

Tons of tropical fruit, guava, mango, flambeed apple. Bbq chicken smoke, roasted pineapple. Light Cinnamon. Toasted nuts. Cream cheese frosting. Mole Manchamanteles. Smooth, silky, creamy mouthfeel.
Sweet and salty. Fruit and bbq. Amazing!

Nuestra Soledad Santiago Matatlan

Feb 10, 2023

Ashen smoke, anise and aloe, peppery. Charred Serrano, dark chocolate and very earthy. Minerality. Light sourdough. Sweet pear and apple. Lots of smoke and fair amount of booze on the exhale.

Nuestra Soledad Lachigui

Feb 10, 2023

Grape Crush soda, milk chocolate, Cherimoya fruit, vanilla light smoke. Sweet cream cheese. Spicy, roasted poblano peppers. Floral white white and lime zest.

La Higuera Wheeleri

Feb 10, 2023

A savory spirit. Earthy, slightly citric. Funky yeast, vegetal tomatillos, pickled asparagus like a Caesar cocktail. Light cedar smoke and red grapefruit. Lots of booze heat.

Lobo de la Sierra Raicilla

Feb 10, 2023

I’m pretty new to Raicilla and was expecting more funk.
Reminds me of a peppery Tequila, floral Pisco and sweet Cointreau.
Flavors of cracked black pepper, Juicy Fruit gum, jackfruit, orange peel. Soapberry like lychee.
Great with pear liqueur as a martini!

5 Sentidos Espadilla – Amando Alvarado Alvarez

Feb 8, 2023

Animalistic! Smokiness from Texas bbq and roasted jalapeño.
Sourdough, barnyard funkiness and Cuban pastilles de guayabo
A vanilla, roasted Agave and Tropical Skittles sweetness. Some mint, basil and light smoke on the exhale.
I’ve drank this with people new to Mezcal, this and Rey Campero Jabali and Derrumbes Durango have been the favorites.

Alipus Santa Ana

Oct 7, 2022

Charred green chiles (Bell Pepper, Pablano) spicy Jalapeño, earth and fire, Juicy Fruit bubblegum some tropical fruit and a hint of Dulce de Leche. Another great mezcal from Alipus!

Bruxo No. 1 Espadin

Aug 11, 2022

4.25/5 A delicious, easy accessible and inexpensive Mezcal. A desserty but not sweet.
Flavors of fresh Oatmeal Raisin Cookies, tangy New York Cheesecake, Oaxacan chocolate and spicy, sweet pipe tobacco.
I have to infuse some of this w/ coffee for Espresso Martinis. That’s a good morning right there, folks.

Rey Campero Mexicano

Aug 2, 2022

October ‘18 batch Bottle #636/664
Chocolate and vanilla, light smoke from toasted chipotle pepper, Creme Brûlée on the nose.
Flavors of vanilla and cream, dark chocolate and light cinnamon, a funkiness that reminds me of Port Salut (Québécois soft, washed rind cheese)
Preserved peach and pear sweetness.

Rey Campero Sierra Negra

Aug 2, 2022

June ‘19 bottle #107/572
Tropical fruits, toasted chilis and earth on the nose.
Initially smoky and quite boozy but the alcohol dies down after a couple sips. Roasted and ripe pineapple, jalapeño spice and a white chocolate sweetness. Roasted chili and mint on the finish.

El Jolgorio Espadin

Aug 2, 2022

Taster @El Cortez in Edmonton, Alberta for $34/oz paired w/ a Fundido of Queso Oaxaceno

Perhaps the best Espadin I’ve had and my favorite of El Jolgorio so far (I’ve only had a few, granted)

Extremely well balanced yet intense flavors of New York cheesecake, dark chocolate and red berries. Some toasted cinnamon and Mexican vanilla.

Alipus Destilado en Barro (San Miguel Sola)

Jul 4, 2022

Originally tasted Feliz, Jesus & Leonardo’s ancestral Mezcals at Los Danzantes’ location in Centro, Oaxaca City for my 30th birthday! Had to get a bottle* Bottle 402/1204 (2019, I believe)

Aroma: BBQ Chicken, apple and citrus instantly. Fruity and earthy minerality.
Taste: Nice heat and smoke on first sip, some roasted pineapple, Pollo Asado. White raspberry, honeydew melon, charred jalapeño. A slight coating of sweet Madagascar vanilla throughout the palate. Reminiscent of a smoked NYC cheesecake. Exhale of light bbq smoke through the nose and upper palate. F me, that’s good!

*I loved all of them but could only bring back one bottle, so I bought the Leonardo for mi padre, since he doesn’t care for the more Smoky/peppery Mezcals. Jesus and Felix were better for my palate.

Montelobos Espadin

Jun 6, 2022

Closer to a 3.25/5
but really enjoy this one for a ‘commercial’ widely available Mezcal. Second time buying the bottle.
Smoke! Campfire / roasted fruit
Chocolate, forest, forest fire, stone fruit, orchard fruit.
A little boozy for ~43% but the price redeemed that.

Los Danzantes (Los Nahuales) Joven

May 29, 2022

Drank on my birthday dinner at their location in El Centro. Just as good as I remember it. Typical flavors of Espadín, but really well done.
Paired w/ a Watermelon Ponzu salad

Los Danzantes (Los Nahuales) Tobala

May 29, 2022

A full pour at their location in El Centro, Oaxaca City
Paired w/ crispy tortillas, salsas and a 5 Mole tasting and fried Plátanos
Peppery, lightly toasty and fruity. Smooth smokiness. A great, full flavored but easy drinkin’ Mezcal!

Montelobos Pechuga

May 29, 2022

A full pour on the terrace of Pitiona overlooking the skyline of Oaxaca City and Templo Santo Domingo de Guzmán.
Paired w/ my first Huitlacoche, Nopales sorbet and perhaps the best tortillas of my life.

Alipus San Baltazar

May 29, 2022

3.5~3.75
Nose is smoky, green bell pepper, sweet passionfruit, earth.
Chilis, light salt, fresh herbs, roasted pineapple. Lingering smoke, and a quick sweet papaya in the front.

Rey Campero Tepextate

May 29, 2022

2018 bottle
Nose is spicy jalapeño, green Jolly Rancher candies, earth and grass after a fresh rainfall and sea salt reminding me of afternoons by the lake.
I’m getting a lingering light campfire smokiness, cracked black pepper roasted poblano and pineapple, dandelion, a bit of green melon, soapberry and citrus. Very clean, fresh and springtime flavors.
Sharp alcohol at first but fades after a couple sips. Delightfully tingles the centre of my tongue. Coats the mouth with vanilla sweetness.
Equally amazing, but completely different from their Jabali variant.

Sunora Bacanora Blanco

May 1, 2022

My first Bacanora. 3.75
Jalapeño, watermelon and cream cheese as well as roasted agave Piña and sourdough on the dough
On the tongue: Mint, black pepper, green pepper, poblano, mild but well balanced. A light earthy smoke on the exhale. Reminds me of Chillin in my grandmas garden eating watermelon.
