Del Maguey VIDA Clásico

Oct 1, 2018

Nose: Very smokey muddy, and starchy, like eating a baked potato next to an autumn bonfire, Gherkins in brine, antiseptic cream and road tar.

Taste: Smoke, icing sugar, licorice, table salt, yellow pears.

Comments: Not the most complex, but a good starter mezcal, and very well priced. I like this stuff, this isn’t my first bottle of vida and it wont be my last.

Palate: Beautiful, peat, salt, smoke, capers, roots, crushed stones, licorice, wintergreen, and planty agave notes

Comments: My favorite mezcal to date, but very extreme and smokey, and possibly not for everyone, but I adore it. Easy 5 stars.

Leyendas Tobala (Puebla)

Sep 18, 2018

Nose: Hard to put into words, but it reminds me of holidays in spain when I was little, Rich sweet floral smell, sun baked earth, new leather, sea salt, capers, vanilla, dried apricot, candied fruit, cream custard. I love this nose!

Taste: Full of tropical fruit, passion fruit, melon, mango, juniper berries, sweet potato, lime juice, sea water, grapefruit peel, black olives, dirty dusty leather.

Comments: I must have got a different batch to the other reviews, because I find this spirit to be amazing.

Zignum Reposado

Sep 18, 2018

Nose: Bags of bourbon character, vanilla, caramel, guava, passion fruit, and a very out of place cream of mushroom soup smell. Only after a few minutes in the glass, do I get the more familiar mezcal smells of smoke and agave.

Taste: Very boubon like, Oaky vanilla caramel, peaches, apricot, orange juice, and a very un bourbon like smoke. Salt, seawater, seaweed, green peppers.

Comments: There is literally nothing wrong with this spirit when you conciser it’s merits, separately, it’s clearly good spirit, in really active casks, I just find when the vegital mezcal smoke is wrapped in a sweet bourbon coat is a strange sensation. Perhaps this would of worked better in a less active cask… Hard one to mark.

Nose: Grassy, roasted agave, Sweet potatoes, rainwater, crushed stone, not particually complex, but altogether pleasant. Much more expressive with water, gooseberries, lime, pineapple, eucalyptus, and tiger balm.

Taste: Sweet arrival, candied pineapple, green apples, chalky and earthy with a touch of juniper. With water gets more earthy and mineral but less sweet.

Comments. It’s pleasant, not the most complex spirit, but enjoyable never the less.
