I am a urologist in Austin,Texas. My wife is from Guanajuato and she has taught me to love the culture of Mexico. Already having a passion for high end and well made tequila it was only natural to transition the much more interesting world of mezcal.

Lalocura Tobasiche-Espadin

Aug 14, 2018

Sweet, like bubble gum initially. Berries and pears on the palate. Finishes out with a hint of leather which I think is the clay distillation coming through. Enjoyed this a lot!

Lalocura San Martinero

Wow! This is nice! Sweet and minty but not overstated. Lots of tropical fruit flavors that are hard for me to individually characterize. Faint clay notes in the background. So smooth and it goes down almost too easy. Be on the lookout for this new release in the US.
Production 2017. ABV:47.1

Rey Campero Mezcla Salvaje

Very Good! Initial nose reminds me of cantaloupe. Nice lemon-lime flavor with a hint of mint. Spicy peppers with some sweetness on the finish. A truly wonderful expression of these three rare agaves bringing out the best in each of them. Bottle 6 of 138 from August 2015.

Vago Espadin en Barro

Lot S-13-E-16 from Nov 2016. 430 liters . 53%ABV. The nose on this is very earthy and almost musty. Some would call it “funky” and there is no doubt that was distilled in clay. It’s quite “hot” on the palate so sip it slow. Overall a very unique and enjoyable mezcal if you like clay pot distillation which I certainly do

El Jolgorio Mexicano

2014. Bottle117/850. Batch 05. Very nice indeed. Slightly smoky and sweet on the initial nose. I detect jalapeños and cotton candy on the palate. Really smooth and easy to drink. Enjoyed this one.

Cruz de Fuego Tepextate

Fresh cut jalapeño peppers on the nose. Slightly sweet and smooth on the palate. Very little bite. Overall : Nice!

Mezcalosfera Tobala/Madrecuixe – Felipe Cortés

WOW! Shared this today with my new friends, Jonny and Tyler. This is an amazing mezcal. Fruity and oh so smooth. My only regret is how hard this one is going to be find. Well worth seeking out in your favorite mezcaleria.

Vago Tobala en Barro

From the April 2017 batch of 78 liters. Wow! Worth your while to seek out this small batch. More fruit and sweetness flavors in this one compared to other tobalas I have tasted. Also with nice hint of clay on the finish. Bravo Tío Rey!

Espíritu Lauro Anejo

Bottled 1/9/2014. Lot 014-ECO. I bought this bottle when I was making the switch from tequila to mezcal. Today, it reminds me of a lot of the good tequila I used to drink. Coming in at 40% ABV and aged in oak this mezcal is smooth and easy to drink. I recommend this one for anyone who is new to mezcal. It is slightly smokey but will not overwhelm you .

Real Minero Espadin y Largo

My first nose on this is a very smooth vanilla. Earthy taste in the mouth but still very smooth. I did not think this one was very hot tasting even at 51.8 ABV. Overall, very enjoyable and unique. Batch RM2-01/2014. Bottle 176/709

El Jolgorio Cenizo (A. Karwinskii)

Jan 9, 2018

Batch 01, Harvest 2014. 440 bottles. Produced by Ignacio Parada who also does an out of this world mezcal jabali. An oaky smoke on the nose but sweetness on the palate. The finish is long and spicy. This is a very interesting mezcal that seems to get better each time I pour a taste. Too bad this is such a rare agave used for mezcal. Definitely worth a try.

La Herencia de Sanchez Ponche de Frutas

Mezcal for dessert?! This is it. This “fruit punch” mezcal has the apple like flavor of the Mexican fruit tejocote along with faint smokey cinnamon on the palate. Try this after a meal with something sweet. I like this one very much. Bottle 228/516 from Sept 2017

Yuu Baal Tobala

Batch YJ06-16. A really nice Tobala’. The smokey wood nose and flavor dominates this one. Enjoy this one with a good Habana cigar!

Rey Campero Tobala

Smooth and slightly sweet! Very little bite on the finish. A well done version of the noble Tobala.

El Jolgorio Arroqueño

Sep 10, 2017

Edition 5 from 2016, 49.5% ABV. I love this mezcal. Very smooth with mint and citrus flavors. Not as smokey as some other Arroquenos I have tasted. Only 350 bottles made so may have to reach for this one, but well worth it.

El Jolgorio Tepeztate

Sep 4, 2017

Edition 13 from 2016. Made by Ignacio Parado. Has a slight earthiness on the nose with a faint hint of peat. Goes down smooth but has a mild spicy taste with a peppery bite on the end. Overall, very good! Bottle 103/550. ABV:49.5
