Musty smell. Somewhat tangy flavor. A bit sharp. Better after a bite of my beef taco. The complexity really comes out with food. Light leather taste. Gets pretty good. Full mouthfeel. Without food it’s kind of harsh, possibly due in part to distillation in clay.
A little spicy, warm. Medium smokiness. Complex and yummy, light caramel flavor. Really good.
Sweet, vaguely fruity, light smoke. Note, this is a blend, made after distillation–different than most ensambles in this way. Somewhat uninteresting, but ok.
Good, roasty flavor– try as I might, I can’t taste the apples. Still tasty.
a little smoky, a bit fruity, a bit hot. Not as fruit forward as some other Tobala mezcals I’ve tried.
Faintly yellow color, gross worm smell. Light crunchy bug flavor. Kind of turpentine like flavor. My wife says it’s smooth amd she likes it. Not me. It’s aged in an oak barrel for 6mo, but it’s hard to pick up on that, with the natural smoke in the mezcal.
2019, lot MSJ 001, Espadin. Claims to be from capones. Tasted at home. Clear straightforward flavor, almost malty sweetness. Uncomplicated, fine.
Agaves Rhodacantha and agustifolia. From Jalisco, El Tuito. Aug 2018, lot 1. 54%. On the patio at Mayahuel. Says it is distilled in a tree trunk somehow. Very rich, earthy vegetal flavor. Lightly sweet, vague hints of maple syrup. Really tasty. My dessert mezcal!
A good classic tobala. Bright sweet vegetal flavor. Clean and delicious. Light smoke.
My wife described it as having a minor bite, low smoke. Clean, light smoke a little bit of sharp alcohol taste. I felt similarly. A little caramel sweetness, a little alcohol heat. A drop of water brings out a little tanginess and maybe some smoke. Good.
Nov. 2015. My wife tastes some fruitiness, notes that it’s smooth without much smoke. More neutral. She likes it. I agree, clean agave taste, low smoke. Refined, mildly sweet taste. Tasty!
Baltazar Cruz, Tobala. In Paso Robles at Taste. Strong mineral rich smokiness. Much earthier than other Tobala mezcals I’ve tried so far. Bread like flavor. Tasty, but unusual. A little light fruit flavor comes out after a minute.
46%, San Pedro Taviche, mezcalera Lorena Díaz Rodriguez. Lot A-42. Smokey as a campfire, you can smell the glass from two feet away, light toasted corn aroma. The taste immediately hits with powerful smoke again, with a lightly mineral-like earthiness. Generally mellow flavor, a little sweet. Very tasty and easy to drink. Really tasty with a fantastic alebrije style paint-job on the bottle. Don’t miss it!
Espadin, 46.9% Santiago Matatlan. Distilled in 2018. Lot P0118 bottle 566/900. Tasted on the patio at Mayahuel with pescado in creamy sauce on cactus paddle. Sweet, mild smoke taste. Vaguely carrot like flavor, with abundant roasted agave flavor. Somewhat fruity, reflecting the fruit that I understand is in it. Try as I might, I’m not getting any chicken flavor, lol. Bright and rich. Very tasty. Near the end of the bottle, which seems to make a difference, takes the edge off harshness. As I worked through my glass, maybe there is something at the end, hard to put my finger on, that might be a little steamed chicken flavor. Might. Apparently this is made by distilling normal fidencio Espadin a third time, this time with fruit and a dangling chicken breast. The third distillation really does seem to take out some of the smoke, makes the flavor a bit milder and lets the fruit flavor show up a little. Really interesting and tasty mezcal.
Espadin with Damiana. 44% San Felipe del Agua. Lot GB006. Sharp medicinal aroma, herbal taste, vaguely liquorice-like without sweetness. A bit like the prominent flavor in fernet. Distinctive flavor, but not in a good way. Woody grass-like flavor.
40%. 7-8 year old Maguey. San Dionisio Ocotepec. Batch WHK-034 Alberto Morales. Dusty aroma with light roasty agave smell. Round well balanced flavor. Lightly earthy, mild sweetness. Easy pleasant drinking, tasty.
Wow! Almost creamy, sweet, smooth, and delicious. Maybe something like an almond flavor here. The flavors seem well balanced and even, nothing jumps out, no harshness, but quite rich. Among my favorites, especially at the price.
Mild flavor, lightly sweet. Slightly musty smell, over a lightly fruity flavor. Good, but not amazing. A little vanilla with a bigger gulp, but frankly a little disappointing. I like the brand story, I was hoping for tastier mezcal.
Near the end of the bottle. Tried at Mayahuel. Light, mild flavor. Remarkably sweet, with an almost honey-like earthiness, maybe peach. Mild tanginess. Really tasty, easy drinking. Working on it a little more, the clay taste is more distinct, with a vaguely rubbery taste, but not in a gross way. Maybe more like the flavor of gum after the real flavor is chewed out.
