nothing half way about this mezcal! perhaps the boldest i have ever had! clocks in at 53 %.nose is sweet with taffy and leather.palate is very dark and rich.dark spices,black pepper,molasses.i dont get any hint of lightness.heavy hitter with a finish that is dark,sweet and goes on for a week!this goes into my category of a winter mezcal.might be too much for hot weather.incredible!
i dont know that its fair to rate this bottle yet.its a fresh bottle and hasnt opened up fully.the nose was very reserved with just a hint of veggie stew.the initial taste was good but not as good as i expected from rm,it was a very expensive purchase,as i sipped a little more there was a much better result.there was chicken broth and very smooth honey sweetness.a dry finish.i have had the same delayed effect from 2 or 3 other rm bottles.they start out of the gate slow but evolve into a wonderful beauty.i was thinking this is between 3 and 4 stars but i think time will turn it into a great mezcal.i will have to revisit and update.willing to give it 4 stars for now.
i have had this botlle for about 2 years.the first sample didnt impress me that much.it sat on the shelf for about 18 months and i tried it again.totally different mezcal.i picked up on the red hots reference tyler had mentioned.nice veggie and sugar balance.pleasant smoke and nice bite.straight forward espadin and rustic.true agave flavor.a little treasure.
first time to try a masparillo.i was not disappointed.the nose was strong with fresh wild flowers and sugar cookies.like spring in a bottle.the first impression on the tongue was reserved but after a second or two it really blossomed.very floral and a stong vanilla note.the finish was medium with mucho vanilla,plenty of smoke and the vanilla continued.mild with a pleasant bite.little hints of honey.wonderful spirit.this was a freshly opened bottle and i cant help but think that time will turn this beautiful spirit into a 5 star when it opens up.
very unique and tasty! the nose is briney and buttery with agave/floral notes.the tastes is a balance of sweet and salt.it reminds me of beef or chicken bouillion.finish has black pepper and some subtle mint.very good!
very mild and gentle spirit.great as an evening opener.my review is in step with the others here.slight fruit candy notes like jolly rancher mixed with cotton candy.the finish is short and not too much depth.not much smoke.the nose is exactly what you get on the palate.not 5 star but very mellow and great flavor.bargain price and good quality.
sotol shares some of the same flavors as mezcal but is more of a medicinal herbal flavor to me.this brand is a low abv but sotols still pack alot of flavor.this is a summer favorite and it is a light spirit.lots of medicinal herbs with brown sugar and some anise and very slight bitter finish.perfect for warm summer sipping.comparable to the finest anejo tequilas but much deeper.price is a steal.
i love dm mezcals.this one is not my favorite but still mabey a notch above averge.to sum it up,it is a watered down version of the standard san luis del rio (espadin) which is a favorite.almost the exact notes but thinner and not as full.the rarity is the reason for the price.the espadin version cost much less and is twice the spirit.
i waited to review this one.i had purchased a bottle about a year ago and was not impressed with the first tasting.it was good but was dark,heavy and the smoke would dominate any other flavors.about a month ago i tried it again but this time i let the pour sit out for a few hours and it really paid off! the dark qualities remained but the mid palate exploded with tropical fruit and brown sugar.it reminded me of the fruit pies that you could get at the fast food joints all those years ago but with a darker flavor.the finish was slightly short with plenty of smoke.it would have been a 5 star if the finish was a little longer.delicious!
very unique.after reading the reviews i couldnt wait to try this one.the nose was very sweet like candy but it outperformed the palate.dont get me wrong.this was very tasty but didnt blow my hair back (though i dont have much hair left these days).the texture was light and watery.the palate was VERY vegetal with pickle and prickly pear.slight agave sweetness and good smoke on the finish.the taste didnt match the nose but the unique quality was enough to earn 4 stars.perhaps time will bring out more flavors.
a beautiful spirit!i ordered this through an on line vendor in chicago about 2 years ago.like another reviewer stated,this was a very small batch of 20 bottles.the nose reminds me of icing on a freshly made cake.the palate starts with baked sugar with hints of cinnamon.midway the taste of agave fruit comes through and the finish has some mild smoke with a little birthday cake.very gentle heat and a total treat.
TOTAL BLISS ! VEGGIE TO THE MAX ! this is a case of the nose indicating what the flavor will be.straw,cup full of garden geens,broccoli,asparagus,tossed salad.through it all is a balance with agave sweetness and the finish is sweet.long with mint.very unique and very karwinski.the mezcal version of v8.special occasion mezcal.very suitable for summer sipping.delicious!
i have noticed that the real minero tobala and espadin come in different proofs.i dont know about the other agave or ensambles.this was a 2016 edition at 54 %.WOW! a total beast!dont start the night with this one.with that being said,this was a very delicious mezcal packed with flavor and depth.the nose has many fruits (mainly melons) and salty sea breeze.the palate is sooooo complex.i get coffee cake with brown sugar and cinnamon.it evolves into melons and black pepper.the finish goes for days with fresh baked bread.its very strong but not overly heavy.this was a newly opened bottle and reviewing it now will only be half the story.you can usually tell when you have a very high quality mezcal that it will evolve in time.i want to update this mezcal again in a few months.this one was hard to find but very well worth the search.SPECTACULAR!
not an average espadin.a notch above.yin and yang.strong but soft.simple but complex.agave and smoke on the nose.taste is vanilla,fig and earth.finish lingers with gentle heat and smoke and very sweet.ANY agave can be sublime in the right hands.don lorenzo has made a perfect espadin.wish they were all like that but thats why we love mezcals.such an incredible variety in the mezcal world!
WOW!this is complex and incredible.the nose reminds me of jager.very unique.there is a mix of strong smoke,very sweet tea,beef stew and the finish has a hint of cherry cough syrup.it doesnt sound great in description but it must be sampled to appreciate.incredible bargain.beautiful spirit!
this mezcal has a nose of dairy and it comes through on the palate.i agree with another reviewer about the strong parmesan but its not offensive to me.i will admit that i couldnt sip on it all night but i think its tasty in small amounts.a little goes a long way.there are notes of mint and some nice hints of sugar.the finish has no smoke but is pleasant.better than average mezcal and great price point.this is the 90 proof.
very good.i didnt get the chocolate note that one reviewer noted but i think we all decipher things in our own way (which is good).there was a distinct sweet quality that reminded me of cotton candy.it was full flavor without being heavy.no burn and pleasant smoke on the finish.great value and one that would be easy to sip on all evening.
the tep of this brand was earthy but this tobala was VERY earthy (in a great way)!there is nothing artificial about this mezcal.the nose is like being in a greenhouse.the entry is soft with reserved sweetness.its so delicious without having to be sugary.flavors open with produce and mineral and the earth goes all the way to a lingering slight black pepper finish.i think this is a great example of how a natural mezcal should taste.i cant help but think that the flavor will only deepen and improve with this fresh bottle.very fond of this brand and the price is a steal!
very nice tep!i agree with another reviewer about the minerality.the nose has some sweetness but is very earthy (like garden soil).the entry is soft,sweet and lots of mineral.its a natural sweetness that seems like a clover honey.mid way the agave really stands out.the finish is fantastic.it has that green bell pepper/veggie tep quality and a pleasant sweet linger.just like the espadin of this same brand,the finish is the best part.again i think its because this mezcalero does not use water in the proofing.it gives the mezcal a wonderful quality.these are small batch mezcals and can be hard to find but worth seeking out.i have just purchased the tobala and will review that soon.
this was a bottle i had opened last year.i was hoping that time would mellow this mezcal but not much had changed.it is a quality mezcal but a slight let down compared to the other mezcals from this label.it is labeled as cuihe but this refers to a mexicano or close relative.the nose doesnt offer much but slight smell of agave.the entry is harsh.i like mezcals that have a bite (like the vago) and some heat but you can have that quality without being harsh.that is the only complaint i have about this bottle.once the heat fades there are dark chocolate notes with black pepper and a delicious mineral finish.if it had a little more smoothness, it would be an easy 4 star.UPDATE 4/24/19.i decided to revisit this mezcal.i took the top off and let it sit for a few hours.wow! this bottle really mellowed out.more sweet layers emerged.one reviewer mentioned bananas and that sweet quality came out.silky texture and finish!4 and half stars.delightful!
