From my understanding, this is basically Sotol Por Siempre in a different bottle. Either way it is delicious. You can smell the grass before taking a sip. Light, grassy, some Doublemint notes, and a bit of that celery herbal-pepper flavor. Big fan of this style of Sotol and great price point. This is made in Mexico despite some confusion on social media. Sipped at Lamert’s in Austin – didn’t catch the batch number.
Delicious mezcal. The heat isn’t too powerful. Tastes like an Americana or Angustifolia to me. One of the better releases from the late Don Fede.
Tasty Tep. There aren’t a lot of Tepextate mezcals on the market these days (probably a good thing given the agave supply). Given the age and rarity of the plant, you never want to experience a subpar Tep because it is kind of a waste. This is the kind of Tep you want – it is a well-distilled Tep with the classic green herbaceous notes. It is a bit starchy with some fruit Jellybean flavors. September 2020 batch, 200 liters.
I love this. Ivan at Madre recommended it recently and afterwards I quickly ordered a full bottle. This reminds me of some of the early US releases of Mezcalosfera from Felipe Cortes (a different mezcalero). It has those amazing bubblegum and mineral notes. A perfect balance of agaves – not too sweet, not too dry. Some might find it a bit perfume-like but this is my jam. May 2021, 80 liters.
Volume 7, April 2019. Notes of apple butter, lemon curd, and lager beer. It tastes very organic and natural. This has received rave reviews. While it is very enjoyable I’m not drawn to it. In other words, I wouldn’t seek out a full bottle. It is a quality product but doesn’t excite me for some reason.
This one has grown on me as I’ve sipped more. At first it was a bit watery but there are some nice agave sugar notes along with Macintosh apple skins and Twizzlers. There is a bit our sourness on the finish which Agave Fairy mentions. It is an easy sipper but also priced as a mixer. Lot MFT04-A.
Enjoyable sweet karwinskii. There are some nice mineral elements and sweetness, almost a bit perfumey. I get the chlorine thing Jonny mentions but it is faint and not too distracting – more like watery mint. Sample, no batch number.
This is a delicious Jabali. I get the vanilla notes others have mentioned. Reminds me of the classic pink and purple Nerds. Sweet with a dash of tart candy. Unique finish.. a bit like Listerine. Batch: SAN-JAB-001
Very promising intense Tepextate pepper aromas. This is my kinda Tep! Reminds me of an old batch from Reyna Sanchez. It’s not overly perfumed or complex like certain Tepeztate mezcales which I love, but it is super raw and organic. Ashy minerals and burnt sugar. Toned down Altoids. 04.20.JV.TX batch. 200 liters.
Series 5. November 2019. Smoky in a chemical sense. Gives me roadside mezcal vibes. Bottle was 2/3 empty so may have chilled out a bit. Not harsh.. a bit of vanilla ash underneath the initial chemical notes. Finish ends up being like sour cherry.
After tasting this a few times the flavors are growing on me. Prominent flavors of fresh cut cedar.. spice, smoke, and touch of cotton candy. Underlying minerality with Red Hots. Not an everyday sipper but a unique sip that I’d recommend; it expands the mind in terms of flavors we think possible in mezcal. 100 liter batch, 49.6%.
More interesting than the Chacolo Lineño to me. Interesting notes like if Hot Tamales candy were made using orange peppers and honey instead of chemicals and sugar, etc. Sugary candy that doesn’t linger like a can of soda.. almost like a mint tonic soda from Whole Foods (if that exists). Lot 001, 42 liters, Febuary 2020.
Lots of citrus and mint as others have noted. Getting a lot of lime zest with dry peppermint tea. Clean and simple with organic notes. I dig it but am not drawn to it. I dig the brand but haven’t fallen in love with a bottle yet. Vol 5, capon 3 years, 47.4%, 62 liters, June 2019.
Lots of anise. Red apple skins. Cinnamon. As Sean at Tobala/Whistlers in Austin said – a Christmas pechuga. The more I drink, the more I like it. Lovely festive mezcal, a bit too anise heavy. A friend said it tasted like Jagermeister. It might change over time. I love the unique qualities of this mezcal.
Tried the last few ounces of this batch at Mezcaleria Tobala with Sean. Great Tepeztate expression with some wild notes. Sweet and dark. Wasn’t focused enough to write a proper review but for feeling is that I wish I had a bottle but alas this is the end.
Sipped at Techo in Austin. Really nice and sweet. Some strawberry shortcake notes. Very drinkable with ABV in control and lite. Lot 14USA-19.
Aromas of dry Oaxacan drinking chocolate. Flavors of organic dark chocolate along with panela vibes and a very neutral but quality Espadin mezcal. Here, the subtle Oaxacan chocolate takes the forefront.. it is excellent for what it is.. consider it a dessert mezcal or novelty mezcal but dang it is tasty. This was a sample from January 2022. I sipped this next to Mezcalosfera Espadin con Cacao (November 2016) and liked this more because the cacao flavors were definitive.
Full throttle 100% Karwinskii ensamble… I’m digging it. This is unique given most ensambles features two or more agaves species. Not dry at all.. lots of sweet syrup notes with some sugary complexity like meringue. ABV is in control. An enjoyable mezcal but not necessarily something you’d guess would be multiple types of agaves versus one type of karwinskii agave.
This surprised me. For me, Tobalas can be all-over-the-place and this one is no exception.. the place it lands is very unique and tasty but not overly fruity. There are notes of copper, candy apple, smoke, and complex sweet minerals. I dig this but wouldn’t necessarily guess it was a Tobala (again, they are all different). I’d like to try an Espadin from Aarón Robles.
An average but certainly approachable Tepeztate for me. Could be a nice introduction for mezcal newbies. I prefer Tepeztates that punch you in the face with vegetal fresh pepper notes. This has the body and flavor of a good mezcal but the Tepeztate flavors aren’t incredibly pronounced. Still, there is a bit of funk, black pepper, candied oranges, and Hot Tamales. Overall a really decent mezcal for casual sipping. Lot TP001.
