Rey Campero Tepextate + Cuishe + Espadin

Jun 20, 2020

Notes of green and notes of pepper. Nothing that stands out too much.

I am used to heavy vegetal tepextate or mineral cuishes. This stands out more like an espadin.

It is not bad, but it also doesn’t carry its value as a $100 bottle.

Flor del Desierto Desert

Jun 12, 2020

AA013 / 0327

Solid sotol. Spice, peppercorn, honey / pollen.

Unión Uno

Jun 6, 2020

This one is surprising. Amazing value.

I’ve only found this one when traveling in Colorado. It is incredibly cheap, enough to mix, but you would be surprised when you have it neat. The cirial has a ton of flavor and I wish I could find this one locally. It doesn’t have the same depth as expensive bottles, but this one provides a surprising amount of flavor at its price point.

Del Maguey VIDA Clásico

Feb 17, 2019

There is not a lot here and it is hard to be positive on this one.

Doesn’t work well for mixing or sipping. I am hesitant to try other Del Magueys after this one.

This is a well bottle for sure.

Xicaru Silver

Feb 17, 2019

Very mediocre. Taste of ethanol, sweet, and then somewhat dry.

No depth. This is not a neat mezcal, and it also doesn’t work very well mixed. I am in between pouring this bottle out and keeping it in my bar.

The pricetag says everything. There is no such thing as good cheap mezcal.

Vago Elote – Aquilino García López

Feb 17, 2019

Elote is right! This smells and tastes like the sugary smell that corn puts off as it caramelizes from heat.

This was a great bottle, with a great value ratio. It offered a flavor that I have not experienced with other mezcal. Very unique.

Bozal Ensamble

Feb 17, 2019

Bozal is a good mezcal. Good price to value ratio.

Little depth, flavors do not stand out. This would be a good mezcal to introduce friends to. Very neutral and has a great looking bottle.

Mezcal is hard to find in Kansas, yet this is in most liquor stores.

Vago Ensamble en Barro

Feb 17, 2019

Lot s-16/05-EACM-18, 42% espadin, 27% arroqueno, 20% coyote, 11% mexicano, 50.5% abv.

I have learned there are many variations of ensambles, so I will now keep an eye out for proportions I haven’t tried. As with most mezcal they are small batch and usually offer something new between batches.

Nose – peppery. No depth.

Slightly bitter. Not too much alcohol bite like others have mentioned, but it almost feels as if its missing depth. I cant quite place the taste. It reminds me somewhat of a garage. Metallic, maybe oily? There is nothing wrong with this mezcal.

It had a great price point. It just doesn’t have the depth I have learned to love. I would buy this again to give it a fair shake on another proportion of maguey.

Montelobos Espadin

Feb 17, 2019

This was the first mezcal I ever tried down in México. This is a very beginner mezcal. It tasted very clean, very sugary, very light.

I had not found this back in the states until I had tried several dozen other mezcal. I agree with others. There is nothing wrong with this mezcal, it just does not have the depth that I have grown to love in other mezcal.

Use this one to introduce your friends or to mix. You cant go wrong with those uses.

Mezcalero No. 19

Feb 17, 2019

March 2015 batch, bottled September 2017.

Nose is very light. Slight sweetness.

Taste is very sugary. I had to double check the ABV. Depth keeps developing. Pollen, very light fruit. Very deep taste. Like sweet natural honey.

Very impressed. Hard to find mezcalero in Kansas and I would definitely buy this bottle again.

El Jolgorio Tobala

Feb 17, 2019

Edition 14, 2016 harvest, bottle 676 / 800, batch GMGTB230617EJ.

Pale nose, the only thing that comes to mind is orange pez, pollen, and or honey.

Silky flavor. Once it hits your tongue, the taste keeps developing into more depth. Fruity, orange, tropical.

Very pleasing. This was one of the first premium mezcals I bought. At 100 a bottle, I would definitely buy again.

El Jolgorio Tepeztate

Feb 17, 2019

15th edition, 2016 harvest, bottle 96 / 400, batch IPTE080416EJ.

Non descriptive nose. Smooth taste. Slightly peppery with dominant vegetal notes. In between green peppers and grass.

Not a lot of depth to the flavor. Very simple notes that do not last long or change.

Overall, good mezcal, extremely poor value ratio. Of the other El Jolgorios I have tried, this one was on the pricier side which ended up dissapointing me. Definitely would not buy again.
