Yola Mezcal

Dec 6, 2020

Lote No: 07 MAR
Nose: Orange citrus. Wild grass. Smells like an espadin outta smell.

Palate: An incredibly appealing smooth, slightly viscous texture. A very cool (no pun intended) orange creamsicle sweetness it. The finish – a sprinkle of Sichaun pepper (hot and numbing) and smoke – it has just the right amount of punch.

A rock solid espadin!

Los Vecinos del Campo Espadin

Dec 5, 2020

Lot No: MV2020ESi
Nose: Shoe polish, leather, spearmint gum.

Palate: Hits you with a lot of heat up front – some viscosity to it. Cherry bubble gum and smoke – relaxed in the middle. A spicy, watermelon finish and the heat comes back swinging.

Great value espadin that continues to grow on me.

Bozal Tepeztate

Dec 5, 2020

Lot No: 00218
Nose: Invigorating but not aggressive. Snow peas. Green pepper.

Palate: Cool, incredibly steady sweetness (cake frosting) profile. The sweet fades smoothly to a jalapeño and saline/mineral finish. I’m a huge fan!

Apaluz Joven

Dec 4, 2020

Lote: APAJ003 (10/2018)
Nose: Subtle aged / funky creaminess. Blueberries.

Palate: Half and half cream with a sprinkle of sugar. Honey smoked beef jerky and cojita cheese finish.

Excellent cenzio mezcal especially for the price.

5 Sentidos Bicuixe

Dec 4, 2020

Batch: BCX01-19
Nose: Wet soil. Fresh, vegetal sweetness. Garden celery leaves.

Palate: Serrano pepper flavor with dialed back heat. Celery. A touch of the agave sugars in the mix. Incredible ash and mint aftertaste.

Madre Espadin – Cuishe

Dec 3, 2020

Lote: 22/281
Nose: Grassy, Vanilla, mandarin orange.

Palate: Roasted agave sugars balanced really nice with the smoke. Green pepper. Tobacco and brine finish.

I dig it! A solid mezcal for the price.

Rey Campero Espadin

Dec 2, 2020

Lote: DSO30-E
Nose: Smoke, citrus.

Palate: Smoky, grassy, banana sweet. Vapory and aggressive in the midsection. Peppery, solvent aftertaste.

Kind of a blah espadin for the price point.

Ojo de Tigre Joven

Nov 30, 2020

Lote: BC001
Nose: Beaucoup smoke. Felt pen. Sweet n’ Low.

Palate: More viscous than expected. Mineral and smoky – some agave sweetness but you gotta dig deep. For a 40% APV it’s stiff. Ash aftertaste.

Not a glowing description but I do like it and it’s good value at 30 bucks.

Yuu Baal Reposado

Nov 29, 2020

Lot#: YR02-20, Bottle#: 1784 / 5100
Nose: Toffee, vanilla and light smoke.

Palate: Saltwater taffy, roasted agave and mesquite. Aftertaste is an awesome mix of sweetness from the barrel aging with some mineral bitterness.

A great espadin reposado.

Los Javis Espadin

Nov 29, 2020

Production Year: 2020, Batch: 58, Bottle: 1849 of 5520
Nose: Garden notes – growing green carrot tops – rather than sweet. Smoke is mild

Palate: Earthy – soil, stone and a bit of a white pepper kick. Sweetness is there in the background. At 42% it tastes like it could be a little higher ABV but still smooth (i.e. doesn’t taste watered down).

Great value sipper – got the bottle for $30. I’d buy it again.

Lalocura Tobala-Tobasiche

Nov 28, 2020

Lot: Tobala-Tobasiche 2020. Bottle: 03-72

Nose: Wet stone. Lightly sweet and somewhat funky creaminess. Inviting and distance campfire smoke.

Palate: Creamy and some funky cheese notes. Great licorice bite and a gentle wave of sweetness. Earthy, limestone finish. All this works exceptionally together – very well-balanced.

GEM&BOLT Mezcal + Damiana

Nov 28, 2020

Lot No. GB006.
Nose: Slight ammonia (smelling salts) – opens the nostrils.

Palate: Spicy sweetness at first, sweetness fades fast but spicy (peppery) tones last. Grassy and vapory ethanol – a bit too pharmaceutical. Aftertaste of bad Balinese cigarettes and Vick’s vapor rub.

The sweet aspect may be the damiana, it was a miss for me. Seems like an unnecessary gimmick.

Del Maguey Chichicapa

Nov 27, 2020

Lot: CHI-192
Nose: Pleasant, smooth smoke. Citrusy fruit with slight ethanol – but good.

Palate: Same as the nose at first – pleasant, very smooth smoky taste. Love the fruity sweetness. Some chocolate espresso bean notes in there. Nice mint and cigar finish.

Vago Elote – Aquilino García López

Nov 27, 2020

Lot: A-11-EL-19 (Aug 2019)
Nose: Caramelized roasted corn, agave sweet, nail polish remover

Palate: Grilled corn, hold the butter. Vanilla. Corn tortilla starch. It’s got a nice, spicy bite to it too. Mineral and bitter feel near the end. Cornnut salt aftertaste.

Sombra Joven

Nov 27, 2020

Lote No. is blacked out on the bottle.

Nose: Light smoke, cotton candy, little bit of banana.

Palate: Vapory ethanol upon entry – tastes somewhat industrial. Citrus sweetness and the peel – the darn whole orange. Cherry, white pepper, tobacco on the finish. Gave it a little bump for price/value.

Mal Bien Mexicano – Ramos

Nov 26, 2020

Nose: Agave sweet, earthy and gentle serrano pepper spicy – killer combo!

Palate: Garden green pepper, slight cayenne pepper and candy. Mineral hit midway through. Finish is awesome – perfect little, spicy kick. No burn and the candy sweetness comes back for the ride. Unreal mezcal – love this!

La Luna Cupreata

Nov 25, 2020

Lote: 24, APV: 45.55%

Nose: Peppermint, fruity, light smoke, tad bit funky.

Palate: Peppermint candy, dried pineapple, white pepper with subtle smoke. Slight funk to it. Mineral finish. Great value mezcal!

Mal Bien Espadin – Morales

Nov 24, 2020

Batch: CLM10
Nose: Ethanol, light smoke and a hint of tropical citrus sweetness

Taste: Smoke is light, a bit of burn entering the atmosphere then a hit of agave sweetness shows up but doesn’t stay long. Cojita cheese and mineral after the sweetness subsides.

Overall: Great value – solid entry-level espadin mezcal for a fair price.

Bruxo No. 3 Barril

Nov 22, 2020

Lote: I0992
Nose: Light smoke and sweetness. Fresh earthy smell, not overpowering. Vapors are well-balanced in intensity and inviting to taste.

Palate: Nice hit of spice and melon sweetness. Salt and clay in the middle. After taste is a bit bitter, slightly numbing. Beaucoup salt as it fades.

Overall: My first barril maguey – rock solid!

Burrito Fiestero Joven

Nov 21, 2020

Batch: 014-A
Nose: The initial smell is somewhat funky… good though! A creamy or buttery sweetness to it.

Palate: More intense than the nose. Smokey creaminess at first then a big explosion of sugar. Hard candy – like a Jolly Rancher but not as tart. This is good value for an entry level mezcal – bought it for $43.
