Cuentacuentos Seemanniana

Jun 22, 2021

Pickles and green beans. Ginger rock candy? Perfume? Enjoyable but caught me off guard. Will have to revisit. Drinks like an 80-proofer

Cuentacuentos Coyote Ancestral

Jun 21, 2021

Clay. Mulch. Anise. Tangerines. Puppy Chow. Am I imagining these notes or are they really there? This is quite the ride. Not sure what to think

Cuentacuentos Espadin Ancestral

Jun 20, 2021

Has more heft to it than most espadins. Old newspapers, coffee beans, a strange celery flavor to finish. Not what I was expecting

Origen Raiz Espadin Chacaleño

Jun 18, 2021

Its not what im used to. Pretty peppery like Greg said. Dunno if time is going to help this one. Not really feeling this one. Will have to re-evaluate. Also, nose is briney/pickle-ish and taste has none of that. Odd

Origen Raiz Madrecuishe

Jun 17, 2021

A tad under 4 stars. A slight malt vinegar taste on the finish… maybe soy sauce. Otherwise, reminds me of the recent Margarito/Mezcaloteca Madrecuishe. Mouthfeel is slightly ‘buzzy’ with lavender and hibiscus.

Origen Raiz Con Pecho de Venado

Jun 13, 2021

Maybe its just my palate, but I like my pechugas to punch me in the face. This one is more like a slight breeze. Its fine, but I was shocked to find that this was a venison pechuga. Some cilantro and rhubarb, but other than that, a standard cenizo.

Origen Raiz Sotol

Not for me. Sharpie marker mixed with candy apples. Super sweet. Strange

Rezpiral Cuishe – Berta Vasquez

Jun 11, 2021

Musty sweetness. I get the same hickory smoke that zack gets. This almost tastes like a distilled rauchbier. Almost like bbq in a glass. Good, but happy I didnt commit to more than one pour

5 Sentidos Coyote – Eduardo Cortez Perez

Jun 8, 2021

Incredible. Pine, double bubble, papaya, cedar, peychauds bitters, and more. I just really really really enjoy this.

5 Sentidos Madrecuixe – Tio Tello

Jun 8, 2021

Its hard for me to describe this one. If I had to describe this to someone, id say its an upper echelon madre that is colored within the lines. Key lime, heavy cream, classic fresh cut grass. Enjoyable AF

5 Sentidos Cuishe – Tio Tello

4.25/5

Smells of army surplus store and dried bananas. Taste is hersheys kisses and light touches of cantaloupe. More banana follows through, but doesnt take the lead. This is pretty darn tasty

NETA Espadín – Delfino & Sozimo Jarquín

Jun 4, 2021

I agree with Rakhal. Also, a weird, cloying sweetness keeps this from being 4*. Otherwise solid. Will probably end up using this in cocktails

Rezpiral Tobasiche – Simeon & Apolonio

Jun 3, 2021

My favorite Rezpiral offering. Lime and tamarind. Great mouthfeel… closer to a xtabentun. Viscous. Topo Chico minerality present, as is a sharpness on the finish that is both pleasant and lingers. This is awesome

Mal Bien Espadin – Antonio Sonido

Jun 1, 2021

Buttercream frosting with apricots and herb garden/fresh cut grass finish. A dang good espadin

Lalocura Rainy Season Tobasiche-Espadín

Jun 1, 2021

4.25/5. I am a HUGE fan of Lalo’s rainy pechuga. It is one of my favorite spirits, ever. This is a great primer on that. Juicy fruit, persimmon and post oak. Really like these flavors.

La Venenosa Azul

May 28, 2021

Most tequilas on the market are boring cousins of most mezcals. This particular distillate, however, is like a full bodied tequila, wearing high heels and a pushup bra. Dangerously drinkable and very subtle with its characteristics. This dabbles in classic taffy/candy sweetness, then takes a meander through some light tropical fruit cup, and finishes with more fruit cup and some coriander. This is lovely.

Maguey Melate Mango Chaparro

May 2, 2021

Id hate to give this any less than 4.5 stars. The mango is there. The drinkability is there. The mouthfeel is there. This is just fantastic. Reminds me of filled wax candies or hard strawberry candy with the jelly/juice in the middle. Gonna have to slowly sip on this one

Mal Bien Madrecuixe Puntas – Cortes

Apr 30, 2021

I almost want to give this an incomplete. Not because it is good or bad, but just because I had it after a few other pours and impression may be different the second time. Placeholder for now… notes to come soon after I let this one open up a bit. However, I do recall this one being a little on the lighter side for a puntas, but still bursting with flavor and very well integrated/clean.

Gusto Historico Cucharillo – Emanuel Ramos

Apr 27, 2021

Definitely different. Intense basil and thyme notes. Almost pizza-esque with the amount of rosemary on the finish. Black pepper… some faint pineapple. Glad I only had a dram and not a whole bottle.

Gusto Historico Madrecuixe/ Bicuixe/ Tepextate – Emanuel Ramos

Apr 25, 2021

Angel food cake, iron/heme on the finish. Green onions somewhere in there. Not bad but not something id drink again and again. Fine. Maybe closer to 3.25?
