Del Maguey Arroqueno

Nov 13, 2020

Easy on the palate.
Clay, honey, cherry with a touch of mineral on the tail. No heavy flavours.
Nice but the mellow flavours mean it’s not a memorable one for me.

NETA Espadin – Candido García Cruz

Nov 11, 2020

Very nice Espadin.
Aromas of citrus and vanilla.
Citrus continues on the palate sweet agave, smoked salt and a mineral finish. Nice balance.
Thick, creamy, almost silky. Glides down with no burn.
My first NETA and it’s solid.

Siete Misterios Tobala

Nov 5, 2020

Clay, fruit and agave on the nose.
Earthiness and clay with orange peel, melon, brine on the palate.
If I compare this to the Vago Tobala I tried recently (and will review soon) it’s a bit more muted. Maybe the clay softens it, maybe it’s the lower ABV, which may suit some. But I grave the strong flavours.
Still, a high quality spirit and I enjoyed it.

Siete Misterios Arroqueno

Nose initially not quite as enticing as the others. Sour, with saltiness, I couldn’t get away from Sauerkraut after I saw the comment. But it grows on you.
Clay, salt, earth with light fruity sweetness.
Glides down very smoothly (as do the other SM clay distills).
Enjoyable.

Siete Misterios Mexicano

Nov 5, 2020

Musty nose, reminiscent of an 80s aftershave, but not in an off putting way.
Five spice, cinnamon, aniseed, lemon peel on the palate with a light pepper kick.
Interesting flavour profile.
This one glides down. Very smooth and approachable.

Smells savoury, full of green with mineral on the nose.
On the palate, it opens up a bit.. It’s bright, gets sweeter with agave, then hints of eucalyptus, leather towards the finish.
Glides down nicely enough. It’s good but without being memorable for me.

Vago Cuixe – Aquilino Garcia Lopez

Nov 5, 2020

Packed with flavour!
Big banana on the nose, with caramel. It carries from far too.
Sugary fruit, more banana, earth and smokiness, then to light mint, .. Long finish.
A little hot as expected, but by no means unpleasant. Unfortunately I could only get hold of a sample, I would have loved a bit more time with this one. Enjoyed every moment.
Fair play, Aquilino. RIP.

Legendario Domingo Oaxaca Espadin

Nov 5, 2020

Light with fruit on the nose.
Sweetness with orange peel, agave and light eartiness on the palate. Not a lot of smoke.
Nice warming finish.
Very pleasant. This is a solid Espadin mezcal at a good price.

Sin Gusano Espadin – Santa Maria Sola

Oct 28, 2020

Really nice Espadin via Sola de Vega from SG. Could be an everyday sipper. Notes of sweet agave with earthiness, almost chalky nature. Interesting and complex, hard not to take another sip. Very good value too.

Mezcalosfera Madrecuixe – Margarito Cortés

Oct 28, 2020

Fruit, citrus and mineral on the nose, crisp on the palate; fruit, light sweetness, earth with a hint of mint; nice mouthfeel and a long finish. Very good.

Lalocura San Martinero

Complex. Magical. Faultless.

Marca Negra Dobadan

Sep 25, 2020

A sample I’d somehow left lying around.. glad I found it.
Fairly subdued but still pleasant citrus nose.
Brown sugar, caramel, grapefruit, lemon peel, pepper on the palate.
Lovely rich, smooth mouthfeel.
Nice lingering sweet, slightly hot finish.
Delicious.

Sin Gusano Ensamble of 6

Sep 9, 2020

Another nice expression from the SG project.
Very smooth and easy to drink; no harshness at all.
Quite a subdued but pleasant nose (maybe because it was alongside a particularly potent Tep and a Jabali). Hints of citrus and honey.
Fruity palate with light sweetness, very smooth mouthfeel.
If one were that way inclined, would make for a good session Mezcal..

Sin Gusano Tepextate – Ocotepec

Sep 9, 2020

Wow.
I love a good nose and this is a seriously distinctive, pungent nose.
Grass, herbs and sushimi on the nose; wild palate with black pepper finish.
Delish..
Tried this against the Rey Campero Tep which I’m also a big fan of, but this one wins.
Nothing not to like here.

Sin Gusano Jabali

Sep 9, 2020

An incredible bottle.
Distinctive Jabali nose with sweet fruitiness and green.
On the palate, there’s a lot going on that it’s hard to explain, but it’s so fresh and delicious.
Massive fan of this one.

Palenqueros Mexicano

Sep 5, 2020

Nice, complex and super smooth mezcal.
A soft nose with sugar cane and raspberry.
Flavours bounce around the palate with some hard to put a finger on… Sweet fruit, leather, mineral, earthiness.
Very nice mouthfeel.
Yep, this is a high quality spirit from Don Valente.

Some flavour similarities with the Lalo San Martinero for me. Slightly less creamy, but the same notes of berry, eucalyptus and clay shine through. You can sense the mastery in the craft behind this. The complexity is fantastic.
Since I first opened the bottle, this has really opened up and got better over time.
I’m noticing this more and more with good mezcals; that they evolve and are sometimes surprising and unpredictable when you revisit them. I guess that’s why we’re all here. And I’m not going anywhere else anytime soon 🙂

Sin Gusano Bruto – Rio de Parras

Aug 6, 2020

Another nice release from SG.
Fruit, sweet nose with hints of floral and light smoke.
Pine, grapefruit, light white pepper on the palate.
Again, smooth and easy to drink. Solid.

Sin Gusano Chino – Aguacatito

Aug 6, 2020

Wow. Such an interesting spirit.
On the nose, the sweetness hit me first – like actual sweets – cherry and strawberry – really nice, but then after it opens up I get all kinds of cheese – blue cheese, parmesan, camembert. Mad but it works. The flavours continue on the palate with some earthiness kicking in. Every time I go back it seems to evolve. So smooth. I’m a big fan of this one.
Thanks to the Sin Gusano project I was also able to try the Puntas of this batch. Clearly not to be taken lightly, but the flavours are the same but intensified. A real experience.

Rey Campero Tepextate

Aug 5, 2020

Green nose – floral, herbs with some sweetness
Mild sweetness continues on the palate but dominated by vegetal flavours, jalapeno, underlying mineral, light smoke.
Spice continues throughout with lingering but light peppery finish.
Thick and smooth. Good balance to it.
Really enjoyable.
