Cuish Tobala – Berta Vasquez

May 27, 2021

Nose – Clay. Subtle icing sugar.

Palate – Interesting! The typical tobala sweetness is there but balanced well with the rest of the flavors. Nice minerality in the finish. Only knock is a tad too much ethanol popping up in the finish.

La Higuera Cucharilla

May 20, 2021

Nose: Like opening a box of new basketball shoes (rubber). Blueberry marshmallow (like in a cereal box).

Palate: Ripe banana all the way through, especially prominent to start. Very floral. A cool minerality to it. Heat really kicks in near the finish but not too crazy. Aftertaste is dry and a little bitter.

La Venenosa Azul

May 20, 2021

Nose: Picking up a little bit of cherry gummy bear. Spearmint gum. Slight whole milk creaminess. No smoke.

Palate: Call me crazy but… chicken Caesar salad – the meaty aspect of a seasoned pan fried chicken breast, veggie aspect of the romaine and parm cheese notes. Watery mouth feel (in terms of low viscosity – not flavor). Sugary sweetness of a breath mint. The smoke comes around in the finish but is a tad too salty.

This raicilla is very cool, I enjoyed it.

La Venenosa Los Gigantes

May 15, 2021

Nose: Honey. Hints of medium cheddar. Very slight genoa salami saltiness.

Palate: Agave syrup sweetness. White pepper spicy in the finish. A tad medicinal all around.

La Venenosa Raicilla Tabernas

May 14, 2021

Nose: Key lime pie. A hint of sweet, cocktail onion.

Palate: Interesting sweet aspect, very concentrated sugary vanilla for a few seconds then it falls right off. Front heavy flavor on the palate but the finish is quite light. A decent sipper and it could make a very cool cocktail.

Lalocura Rainy Season Tobasiche-Espadín

May 13, 2021

Nose: A massive sugar blast! Scent of raw, sweet bread dough lingers.

Palate: Exceptionally sweet (baked apple pie) but by no means does it over do it. Very soft mouth feel. A very long, high-quality cigar finish but it is a smidge heavy. The apple pie sweetness resurfaces in the aftertaste and is delicious with the smoke. Lalo… you’ve done it again!

Mal Bien Espadin – Antonio Sonido

May 12, 2021

Nose: Felt pen. Vanilla frosting. A pretty light nose.

Palate: Shades of a sweet and savory stir fry sauce (possibly ketjap manis). Very nice mouth feel (slick but not too viscous) and when I work it around I get some awesome icing sugar pops. Big smoke in the finish. White chocolate and oddly green onions in the aftertaste both which blend in with the lasting smoke.

NETA Espadín – Delfino & Sozimo Jarquín

May 11, 2021

Nose: Warm, sweet bran muffins and a whiff of cream cheese.

Palate: Those fresh bran muffins again – baked with cranberries. A beautiful, almost tangy smoke in the finish. A lasting aftertaste with the perfect balance of sweet and salty.

Koch Ensamble – Angustifolia/ Karwinskii

May 10, 2021

Lot: 01/19
Nose: A bit of an ethanol whiff to start then it settles down. A nice sweet, agave funk that follows.

Palate: Dried banana chips. Finish is long and the smoke is so-so, kind of cigarette-ish. Salted peanut and lingering smoke in the aftertaste. The same ethanol in the nose is present throughout and makes it a tad harsh.

This is a decent ensamble for $45 – but it’s just OK.

Origen Raiz Madrecuishe

May 9, 2021

Nose: Invigorating nose feel, like smelling highly carbonated soda water.

Palate: Fruity then a quick shift to rubber then a long, quality brine/smoky finish. Medium viscosity. A solid round of all the mezcal goods – sweet, salty, smoky and a nice heat to it. Really good stuff.

Mazot Bacanora Uvalama

May 8, 2021

Nose: Eucalyptus. An interesting, subtle mix of dark chocolate and wild raspberry. Somewhat dusty.

Palate: Cool, amber coloring. Very medicinal. Long finish with a bit of a prune juice sweetness. Aftertaste of herbal tea. I’ll probably love this when I’m 90.

Mazot Bacanora Blanco

May 8, 2021

Nose: An empty, dusty room. Mild cheddar. Felt pen.

Palate: Like chewing red and black licorice at the same time. Plums. Anise but not as numbing. Aftertaste is a bit metallic.

Origen Raiz Espadin Chacaleño

May 7, 2021

Nose: Dusty. Pineapple sweetness and very little smoke.

Palate: Mint leaves. Leather. Oddly picking up a hint of shrimp shells. Long, somewhat spicy finish.

Tastes like a quality espadin but a tad more of an herbal profile. I dig it!

Origen Raiz Con Pecho de Venado

May 7, 2021

Nose: Sprite soda. Gentle smoke. A touch of venison.

Palate: Lean, wild meat which is dynamite with the smoke. Spicy and the right amount of heat. Couldn’t put my finger on the finish until I read Rakhal’s review below – roasted sunflower seeds – spot on! A long, lingering salty and somewhat buttery aftertaste.

Wow…incredible pechuga!

Origen Raiz Sotol

May 6, 2021

Nose: Felt fabric. An unripen plum. A hint of egg white.

Palate: Very grassy. Sweet and smoky aspect that’s like what I envision Nicotine gum to taste like. Limestone in the finish. Lasting bitter aftertaste.

Mazot Palmilla

May 5, 2021

Nose: Incredible! Two handfuls of wet, nutrient-filled garden soil.

Palate: Very nice viscosity. The sweetness is an odd but still interesting mix of peppermint and cherry candy. Menthol smokiness. Slight downside with heavier eucalyptus notes in the finish.

This one is complex and super original.

Batuq Reserva de la Casa

May 5, 2021

Nose: Buttered pasta sprinkled with Kraft parm cheese. Very subtle sweet onion.

Palate: Minty and medicinal. Heavy black licorice midway through and lasts through a very long finish. Slightly numbing feel with the aftertaste.

I tried the Blanco and this is the amped up version – definitely more flavor with the bump in ABV.

Mal Bien Madrecuixe Puntas – Cortes

Apr 30, 2021

Tick…tick…tick…BOOM!

Nose: Fruit punch. Raw cherries. Fine leather. A hint of sweet cream.

Palate: Junior mints. Brown sugar and cake. A saltiness you’d get from parmesan cheese. Very long, dry finish. A bit of a popcorn aftertaste.

Seriously great stuff and like El-Dawg mentioned, this goes down way too easy for 57%.

Batuq Blanco

Apr 25, 2021

Nose: Grassy. Beef jerky. Sharp cheddar cheese.

Palate: Slick, oily mouthfeel. Big time beef jerky again, very meaty. Lychee. Grape popsicle. Anise.

Cuish Madrecuishe – Hermogenes Vasquez

Apr 25, 2021

Nose: Hard citrus candy. Slight bit of cream corn.

Palate: A hint of cheesecake sweetness. Lime zest. Peppermint heat. Long, sweet and warm finish. Very light smoke and saline aftertaste.
